Will The CA Bar Assn Yank U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff's Law License?
Don't hold your breath, despite parallels between Schiff's censured misconduct and alleged ethical breaches by Attorney John Eastman who represented GOP President Donald Trump.
Various state bar associations have worked assiduously for years to relieve attorneys who had any association with former GOP Pres. Donald Trump of their law licenses.
Trump advisor John C. Eastman is currently in the midst of a court battle in Los Angeles to keep his law license after being charged by the California State Bar with 11 counts of ethical and statutory violations related to the 2020 presidential election and the Jan. 6, 2021 raid on the U.S. Capitol.
There apparently have been no opportunities to similarly de-license Democratic attorneys until now.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Congress voted 213 to 209 to censure U.S. Rep. Alan Schiff, D-CA, the former Democratic chair of the House Intelligence Committee, for lying about President Trump’s ties to Russia in 2016. At one point, Schiff, a former federal prosecutor, said he had a “smoking gun” and “direct evidence” of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
No Criminal Conspiracy
Alas, when the smoke dissipated there was nothing there.
And a $30 million investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for the U.S. Department of Justice ended in 2019 with a finding that there was no criminal conspiracy.
Special Counsel John Durham in May released a 300-page report after a multi-year investigation stating the FBI’s basis for starting its investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign involvement with Russia was “seriously flawed” and reflected anti-Trump bias. Durham also found no criminal conspiracy.
When Schiff was finally forced to release transcripts of interviews conducted by his committee in 2020, it turned out a parade of America’s top intelligence officials testified there was no criminal conspiracy.
Millions of dollars wasted. Lives ruined with accusations and attorney fees. Vital issues of importance to Americans, deferred.
The censure resolution says Schiff held positions of power during Trump’s presidency and “abused this trust by saying there was evidence of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.”
According to the resolution, Schiff “hindered the ability of the Intelligence Committee to fulfill its oversight responsibilities over the Intelligence Community” and “misled the American people and brought disrepute upon the House of Representatives.”
Same Charges for Schiff as Eastman?
After the censure vote, Schiff, who is currently running for the U.S. Senate in California, showed a complete lack of a remorse. In a shocking display of defiance, Schiff tweeted: “To my Republican colleagues who introduced this sham resolution: You honor me with your enmity.” This may well signal that Schiff intends to persist in the course of behavior that led to his censure.
Clearly, the California Bar must act immediately to preserve the appearance of justice!
In an odd coincidence, many of the allegations facing Eastman are appropriate to Schiff’s situation, which would make quick work of the California Bar’s job. For example…
