U.S. Supreme Court's Abortion Decision Was A Poison Pill For GOP

The problem was exacerbated by former Pres. Donald Trump, who ignored the nationwide backlash and pushed candidates in GOP primaries with extreme anti-abortion stances.

The GOP want to blame former President Donald Trump for their disappointing mid-term results but he couldn’t have done it without the U.S. Supreme Court.

The six vote conservative majority on the Court likely doomed the GOP’s chances for success in the mid-term elections when they abolished the constitutional right to abortion on June 24, 2022, abandoning 50 years of juris prudence.

Trump ignored the nationwide backlash that followed the Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization when he pushed losing candidates with extreme anti-abortion positions, such as venture capitalist Blake Masters in Arizona.

Ironically, Trump’s actions may have had nothing to do with abortion - he was picking candidates to support his 2024 presidential run, which is now in jeopardy because of the GOP’s losses.

Told You?

Here’s my Aug. 24 tweet to the Right Side Broadcasting Network when it reported Trump had a “perfect night of wins” with respect to his endorsements in the GOP primary elections:

The one-two punch - the Court’s Dobbs decision and Trump’s endorsements - alienated women and young people, who decided the mid-term elections and likely will decide the presidential election in 2024.

About 61% of Americans support legalized abortion, according to Pew Research polling from July 2022, including 39% of Republicans. Of this number, 63% of women and 74% of people aged 18-29 said abortion should be legal in “all/most” cases. (Even 56% of Catholics support abortion rights.)

The Dobbs decision was so poorly timed that it supports the Court’s dubious argument that it is apolitical.

According to NBC exit polling, 78% of voters in Pennsylvania said abortion was the main reason they cast their ballots for Democrat John Fetterman.

Polling data shows most Americans disapprove of the job that Pres. Joe Biden is doing, and think the GOP has a better chance of improving the economy and stopping masses of economic immigrants from around the world flooding through the U.S. open borders.

What a screw up.
