The Dilemma Of The Women's Sports Foundation And Billie Jean King
They are stuck with an untenable position supporting trans women (biological males) on female sports teams, even though it adversely impacts female athletes and poses a safety risk to girls and women.
One of the great ironies with respect to Pres. Joe Biden’s 2021 executive order permitting biological males to compete in female sports is that it was supported by the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF) and its founder Billie Jean King.
The WSF and King for years have signed amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court, issued statements and engaged in advocacy in support of trans participation in female sports. For years, they have been hugely influential in denying justice to female athletes deprived of rightful victories by biological men.
The WSF even urges sport governing organizations to provide access for transgender athletes to “locker rooms, showers and toilet facilities for their gender identity.”
WSF and King appear to be intent upon plumbing the outer depths of hypocrisy.
King, now 79, is a former professional tennis player who came to national attention in 1973 at the age of 29 when she won the televised “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match against Bobby Riggs, 55, a professional tennis player, hustler and loud mouth male chauvinist.
Some 50 million looked on while King “beat” Riggs at the Houston Astrodome, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. The Battle of the Sexes put King on the map. It was an important milestone in women’s athletics.
But King seems to have forgotten that Riggs was 55-years-old on that fateful day.
It is very likely King would have lost had Riggs been her age instead of two-and-a-half decades older.
A few months prior to King’s match, Riggs crushed Australian tennis player Margaret Court, then the world No. 1 women’s tennis player. In a match known as the “Mother’s Day Massacre” Riggs won 6-2, 6-1.
Court was a better tennis player than King, who was ranked No. 2, and Court consistently beat King in some three dozen matches over their careers.
(By the way, the very integrity of the King/Riggs match later came into question when it was reported by ESPN that Riggs ‘fixed’ the match to pay off gambling debts he owed to mobsters.)
Overwhelming research shows that post-pubescent men have more muscle mass and strength than women.
Why are King, a lesbian, and the WSF continuing to argue that biological males who “identify” as women should have a legal right to compete in women’s sports?
The WSF abandons any pretense of relying on science when it claims that a post-pubescent male-to-female transgender athlete has no advantage over a biological female. That’s just false and they know it. The WSF and King cite no research supporting their position.
The World Athletics Council this week decided to exclude post-pubescent male-to-female transgender athletes from female World Rankings competition “to prioritise fairness and the integrity of the female competition.”
Unfair and UNSAFE!!!
More than a dozen studies show that the biological advantage conferred by male puberty makes it unfair for trans women who are biological males to compete against female athletes. And that advantage is only minimally reduced when testosterone is suppressed. Post-pubescent males have a performance advantage of 10% to 50% over females due to increased muscle mass and strength. This is no surprise; everyone knows this.
An international literature review in 2020 found “significant differences between the sexes which render direct competition between males and females unfair in most ‘gender-affected sports’ due to the physical advantages of males, and often unsafe in sports which allow physical contact and collisions.”
It is most shocking that the WSF and King actively support a policy that makes it unsafe for female athletes.
A Vermont school basketball team earlier this month refused to play another school’s team that included a transgender player citing safety reasons. It is obvious the risk of injury rises if girls must play taller, stronger and heavier biological males.
Moreover, contrary to the WSF and King, it is clearly not discriminating against transgender athletes to ask them to compete against members of their birth sex (males), in a trans category or in a category that is open to anyone who chooses to compete. The opposite is true - it is discriminating against women to make them play men.
It literally is sex discrimination to force female athletes to compete with biological men who “identify” as women.
Title IX was passed in 1972 to ensure parity between male and female athletics. Forcing females to compete with males results in a lack of parity and is contrary to Title IX. To allow boys and men to compete against girls and women results in theft by biological males of real estate on the winner’s platform, college scholarships, fame, glory, etc.
The WSF is a nonprofit organization that is highly dependent upon donations. It says it is focused on enabling girls and women to reach their potential in sport and life. Yet, the WSF’s position on trans women in female sports does exactly the opposite of its supposed mission.
So why are the WSF and King insistent upon holding an unsupportable position that harms female athletes? One can only speculate. Could it be that they have accepted funding from trans groups to advocate on behalf of trans? The WSF refuses to say whether it has accepted trans $$$.
Why are WSF and King betraying the women who built the WSF and made King a sports icon?
It is unacceptable that the WSF and King are seen as a credible resource by the Biden administration and the Democratic Party, which are working to amend Title IX to make it a legal “right” for trans women to compete on female sports teams. The WSF and King no longer represent the vast majority of female athletes who are demanding a fair and safe playing field.
